Listening Cities Symposium in Vienna
urban soundscapes – intervening in / composing with
The Symposium aims to promote exchange between artists and theoreticians already working in the area of city sounds as well as to introduce the subject for artists new to the field.
The event, organised by the cultural center Alte Schmiede together with the Institute of Composition and Electroacoustic Media of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, takes place at the campus of the university as well as at the Alte Schmiede in the historic center of Vienna.
Main features are:
introductory workshops for artists new to the field
guided sound explorations through Vienna
talk sessions and discussion panel elucidating the theoretical background
concerts and presentations of works and projects related to the subject
Entrance to all events is free

Wednesday, May 30th (Campus of the University of Music – “Locations”)
1 – 1.30 pm: Official Welcome
2 – 7 pm: Individual sonic exploration of Vienna.
Meeting points: scheduled sound interventions in certain city spaces by the Vienna Noise Orchestra (see Sound Map)
7 pm: Café Hegelhof (1st district, Johannesgasse 16, Tel 1-512 82 21), last sound intervention by the Vienna Noise Orchestra
Thursday, May 31st (Campus of the University of Music)
10 am – 1 pm: Informal listening sessions and discussion of material recorded on Wednesday
2 – 7 pm: Guided sonic explorations
7 – 8 pm: Lyon in concert “Soundscape compositions and the Groupe Musiques Vivantes de Lyon (GMVL)” with works from Marc Favre,Bernard Fort, Lionel Marchetti und Gilles Malatray
8.30 – 9.30 pm: Florence in concert ”In & Out Italian Soundscapes” with works from composers associated with the center for music production and research Tempo Reale, Florence: Mattia Bonafini,Luigi Mastandrea, Salvatore Miele, Francesco Giomi, Marco Dibeltulu, Lelio Camilleri

5 – 6 pm: Panel discussion on “urban soundscapes – intervening in / composing with”
