On this site you can listen to sounds and soundscapes recorded at specific locations by clicking markers on the Google map. Most are single sounds but some are linked as sequences, during which the map locations automatically change in play.
The core of the recordings were originally made for the Favourite Sounds Project. This started as a program for London’s ResonanceFM in 1998 and has continued in other world cities since. The project asks as many people as possible the seemingly simple question, “What is your favourite sound of London… Beijing… Prague…, and why?” The responses have been fascinating, revealing both the city of the ear and how people feel about the everyday soundscapes in which they live and work.
The site will add more existing and future favourite sounds, but we intend to include other projects and recordings simply because they are great to listen to.
